Cruising to Copenhagen

Scandinavia's coolest city

Scandinavia has become a highly sought-after destination, with the region's literature, films and cuisine more popular than ever before. The quality of life in this part of Northern Europe is also famous for being exceptionally high, while the locals are known for their chic sense of style and ice-cool character. Nowhere is this truer than in the Danish capital, Copenhagen.

Punctuated by charming canals and waterways, the city is one of the most picturesque in Europe, and is definitely worth visiting as part of a cruise - largely thanks to the fact that all of its main attractions are so close together. This makes the city easy to navigate, and provides a wonderful day out with the chance to explore by bicycle as well as on foot. In fact, one of the first things you'll notice here is just how bike-friendly the place is, with over 400 km of cycle paths and around 60 per cent of the population getting around on two wheels - it's all part of that cool, eco-friendly Scandinavian feel.

There are lots of different areas to explore in and around the city centre, with many of these being islands that are connected to one another by a series of bridges. Nyhavn, for example, is where you'll find rows of colourful buildings lining the waterfront, and is known for its many excellent cafes and bars. It's a great place to relax in luxury while enjoying the view. Stroget, meanwhile is one of Europe's longest pedestrianised shopping streets, and City Hall Square is the historic heart of the city. Copenhagen is also famous for its many art galleries, with the National Gallery of Denmark being the country's premier exhibition space for Danish and international art. If you're into the contemporary scene, however, you'll do well to find a better gallery on the planet than the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art (which is in fact in Copenhagen, not Louisiana!).

Scandinavian food is becoming increasingly popular, with its focus on traditional Nordic ingredients placing it high in the global gastronomic scene. Copenhagen boasts 15 Michelin-starred restaurants (more than any other Scandinavian city) where visitors can sample the very best of the nation's cuisine.
