The portside settlement of Bodrum has a lot to boast about. From its deep history (it was the site of the ancient city Halikarnassus) to its legendary nightlife (this is where people from Istanbul come if they want to have a really good night out on the town) the city outdoes itself at every opportunity. Much of the joy here comes from exploring the two distinct sides that make up modern Bodrum. To the east, efforts from the local authorities have succeeded in creating a long thin beach, behind which you'll come across rows and rows of bars and clubs that pump out techno music at all times of day and night. To the western side, you'll find a much more sedate way of life revolving around the marina and yacht club. This is where you'll find the best supermarkets and, crucially, the best shopping. There's also a thoroughly pleasant atmosphere in the evenings as the locals and the tourists sit out together on the marina, enjoying a glass of wine as the sun descends.
