Panama's second largest city, Colon, has a lot to boast about. An essential port, commercial centre and tourist destination, it is a duty-free zone and the shopping is splendid.
But it is perhaps the metropolis's fascinating history that is most worth checking out during your time here. Constructed in 1850 by Americans working on the Panama railroad, it has seen plenty of colourful events considering its relatively young age of about 150 years.
Once upon a time referred to as the wickedest city of the Americas, what stands there now bears little resemblance to what Colon once was. Thriving naval activity has done much to change this, of course, as well as a thrusting market scene.
As well as exploring the port and everything it has to offer, you'll also want to visit the Municipal Park and take a wander along the canal. There is plenty to find along here.
