The galloping glacier
There are a lot of reasons why the Hubbard Glacier pulls cruise visitors back time and time again. As the largest tidewater glacier in North America, it measures 76 miles long and plunges 1,200 feet into the depths of the bay. The views are phenomenal, the various blue hues, enchanting. But there is one fact about this particular mass of ice that commands particular fascination. Namely, it is hurtling towards the Gulf of Alaska thanks to natural tides and currents.
It is for this reason that Hubbard has become known as the Galloping Glacier, and its movement often displaces pieces of ice around the size of ten-storey buildings - imagine the splash!
The glacier dwarfs even the tallest of cruise vessels completely and utterly. Surrounded by snowcapped mountains, it is an incredible place to take photos - and not just of the scenery, since there is plenty of wildlife to be seen in Disenchantment Bay.
