Cruising in Argentina
As a South American country, it’s easy to forget that the very southern tip of Argentina is closer to Antarctica than almost any other city or town in the world. On a South American cruise there are three Argentinean cities that may show up on your itinerary: Buenos Aires, Puerto Madryn, and Ushuaia; for an Antarctic cruise, Ushuaia can be a port of call or the embarkation point.
Buenos Aires is the northernmost of Argentina’s port cities, and is also its capital city. It’s home to one of the grandest opera houses in the world—the Colon Theatre—an imposing sight by day, and even more impressive at night. Many of the city’s historic districts are exciting places for sight-seeing, like the La Boca district, with its tango cafés, and the city’s oldest district, San Telmo, with its picturesque cobblestone lanes and street performers. Curiously enough, one of the most fascinating places to visit in Buenos Aires is the Recoleta Cemetery, which contains thousands of separate vaults. Some are so large and beautifully decorated, walking the ‘streets’ of the cemetery gives you the impression that the vaults are more like houses for the living than the dead.
Further south, Puerto Madryn, in the Patagonian region of Argentina, is a smaller city with its own unique set of attractions. From here you can visit the Peninsula Valdes or Tombo National Reserve, and depending on the time of year, see seals and sea lions, whales, dolphins, and penguins. At the southern tip of Argentina on the Tierra del Fuego archipelago, is the city of Ushuaia, which is the starting point for many Antarctic cruises. From here you can take a day trip to the Beagle Channel for wildlife viewing, or see the Tierra del Fuego national park via train or car. There are some incredible sights here—tall glacier-covered mountains, icy-cold rivers, and pristine forests.
Summers are hot and winters cold in Buenos Aires, but in Ushuaia, it’s cool in summer and freezing in winter; if your cruise includes stops in both cities you’ll want to be prepared for all types of weather.
