Nessebar, Bulgaria

Cruising to Nessebar

If you're looking for the perfect mix of sunshine and history then you simply won't find anywhere better than Nessebar, with this medieval city sitting on an island in the Black Sea and containing an incredible array of buildings and monuments from times gone by. Connected to the mainland by a man-made isthmus, it's one of those places where history really does seem to come to life, with the ruins of its ancient structures transporting visitors back to another era.

In particular, Nessebar is notable for its staggering collection of ancient churches, with the Basilica of the Merciful Virgin dating back to the 6th century, while the Svet Sofia Church is even older than that. As well as exploring the buildings themselves, visitors who want to learn more about the history of this stunning island city should be sure to check out the Archaeological Museum, which contains exhibits displaying ancient Greek and Roman artefacts, among other things.

Once you're ready to return to the present day, meanwhile, simply hop across the isthmus to the modern part of the city, where you'll find loads of trendy beachfront restaurants, while also having the chance to partake in all manner of water sports.
