Summer 2021 UK Coastal Cruises
UK coastal cruises are only available to vaccinated guests.
Given the advanced progress of the UK vaccination programme, and strong expressed preference on the part of P&O Cruises guests for this limited series of UK coastal cruises, the summer 2021 UK coastal sailings on Britannia and Iona will be for UK resident Covid-19 vaccinated guests only.
For these cruises the definition of “vaccinated” is a minimum of seven days following the second dose of the currently approved Covid-19 vaccines being administered. Proof of vaccination and the dates given will be required (approved forms of evidence will be confirmed closer to time of departure) and this will be required to be shown at the terminal prior to boarding. Failure to provide this evidence will result in denial of boarding. There is no age restriction on this series of UK coastal cruises but all guests of all ages must meet the requirements of the Covid-19 vaccination policy.
Please note that all other P&O Cruises holidays on sale (i.e. cruises that are not Summer 2021 UK coastal cruises) do not currently require guests to be vaccinated.
Further detail around requirements specific to your cruise will be provided to you prior to departure.
Domestic cruises will be able to operate with up to 1,000 people or 50% capacity, whichever is lower. This capacity limit applies to passengers only. P&O Cruises will initially be reducing the number of guests that can sail on their ships for the summer 2021 UK coastal cruises and have reduced the number of cabins and suites available accordingly, to enable a smooth return to service. This means that ships will not be at full capacity.
Passport and Insurance Requirements
All guests will need a valid passport to travel on the summer 2021 UK coastal cruises. UK getaway cruises are only open to UK residents.
It is also mandatory for all UK guests to take out comprehensive travel insurance for their holiday with P&O Cruises. Insurance must include medical cover of £2 million minimum and cover for emergency evacuations and medical expenses related to COVID-19. You must also ensure your policy includes cover for repatriation, cancellation and curtailment and full cover for any and all pre-existing medical conditions worldwide, or as a minimum, in the countries you are due to visit. You will be asked to confirm you have travel insurance at the terminal and you may need to provide proof of your policy. You will be denied boarding, at your own expense, if you do not arrange insurance.
These cruises will depart from Southampton and will sail in UK waters around the UK coast. There are no ports of call (except the last Britannia sailing which calls at Liverpool), these are coastal cruises. The aim is to sail to where the best weather is, P&O Cruises will look at the weather forecast each cruise and aim to take the ship where it is warm and sunny.
On voyages which stop at UK ports of call guests will only be able to go ashore on shore excursions that have been organised and approved by the cruise line. Guests will not be able to go ashore independently at this stage.
Coastal Cruises FAQs
Will I need a COVID-19 test?
Guests must have a Covid-19 test at the cruise terminal before being allowed to board. This will be paid for by the cruise line.
Can I book two UK getaway cruises back to back?
Back to back bookings will not be available on these new summer 2021 UK coastal cruises.
Do I still get my loyalty benefits on these cruises?
Yes all loyalty benefits will be delivered on these cruises.
Do children under the age of 18 need to be vaccinated in order to travel?
Guests of all ages must meet the requirements of the Covid-19 vaccination policy.
Will Covid tests be required for the UK getaway sailings and for future cruises?
As the vaccine roll out progresses and the Government has announced its intended roadmap for the future, the guidance is continually evolving. Pre-embakation covid tests may be required as part of P&O Cruises framework of protocols and will be complimentary in the price of the holiday. P&O Cruises will update all guests prior to their holiday departure date if this is the case.
What are the enhanced health protocols and will I need to wear a mask?
All guests and crew will be required to follow enhanced health and wellbeing measures to protect everyone on board on these cruises. These have been developed with guidance from P&O Cruises global medical and public health experts and scientists, and in close coordination with UK Government agencies. In line with P&O Cruises requirement that crew wear face masks on board, guests will also be required to wear a face mask in certain public areas of the ship. Enhanced sanitation measures and social distancing will also be in place. As per P&O Cruises current health protocols, there will be no exceptions to wearing a mask and guests will be required to wear a face mask when inside, on shore excursions and on deck if social distancing can't be maintained. Masks can be taken off when guests are in their cabin, eating or drinking, during certain spa treatments, and in the pool and hot tubs. Therefore, if you are exempt from wearing a face mask, P&O Cruises recommend you do not make a booking as you will not be permitted to travel unless you wear a face mask.
Will passengers be allowed to board if they’ve been in contact with a COVID-19 case?
If a guest has been in contact with someone who has Covid-19 symptoms or has been self-isolating in the days prior to your cruise they will not be permitted to board the ship.
Do I need to book my dining daily and can I still confirm 1st / 2nd (or Freedom for P&O Cruises) dining in advance?
For UK getaways onboard Britannia, in addition to Freedom and Club dining, there’s going to be an additional early sitting. On Iona sailings, in addition to Freedom dining, there’s going to be an additional early sitting. Please look out for further information around your dining preferences.
You may also be asked to pre-book your table in advance. While the guidance may evolve prior to your holiday, the current guidance is for households/travelling groups to dine together with no other guests.

P&O Cruises Covid-19 safety measures
Before and After Cruising
To be allowed to board the ship, guests must have tested negative to Covid-19 and have completed a health declaration which will be reviewed at embarkation. At the cruise terminal guests must wear face masks, adhere to social distancing rules and have their temperature taken. With crew safety also a priority, staff must comply with the onboard guidance and undergo Covid-19 tests. They will also be highly trained in the cruise line’s procedures. At the end of their cruise guests will be required to complete a guest locator form. This is to comply with the government test and trace initiative and will be used to alert guests should they have potentially come into contact with the virus during their cruise.
Social distancing will be maintained through adapted dining, entertainment and recreation facilities, including pre booking for activities and dining, as well as no more self-service buffets. Guests will be able to link their bookings with others onboard to form a travelling group, but only to a maximum size in line with UK government regulations at the time of sailing.
P&O Cruises’ high standards of onboard cleaning will be further enhanced, using high-quality products with a proven effectiveness against Covid-19. These measures will extend to accomodation, while hand sanitiser and washing stations will be conveniently located across the ship for guests to use.
