Cruising in Puerto Rico

Arriving in the beautiful sheltered harbour of San Juan, it’s just a short walk to the beautifully preserved 16th century heart of the city. Within the remains if the old city walls, this charming area of cobbled street, brightly painted houses, art galleries, antique shops and lively cafés is one of Puerto Rico’s favourite tourist attractions, where the old and new worlds meet in perfect harmony.

Originally a fortified Spanish colony, the old town still has a strong Spanish flavour, mixed with African and indigenous Taíno influences, overlaid with more than a touch of modern America. Dance to the city’s salsa beat and enjoy its hot and spicy tropical dishes, go for a barbeque steak or hamburger, or try the modern ‘Nuevo Latino’ cuisine. The island’s vibrant history can be found around every corner—in its bilingual culture, its arts and crafts, or served up on a plate.

One of the favourite tourist spots is the old colonial stone fortress, Castillo San Felipe del Morro, which still stands proudly on its headland at the end of the old town, commanding a view from its cliff top across the entrance to the harbour. Other notable architectural treasures include the San Juan Cathedral and the forts of San Cristobal and La Fortaleza. The latter is the oldest fort in the town and has a distinctive blue and white neoclassical design.

Travelling beyond the town, you will find an island full of natural wonders. A trip to the National Forest of El Yunque, an hour’s drive east of San Juan, offers an experience of the rainforest and its spectacular waterfalls. There are several marked and easy to follow hiking trails. The island is also known for its lovely coastline. One of the most beautiful palm-fringed sandy beaches is at Boquerón, near the town of Cabo Roja, around 200km from San Juan on the island’s west coast. Closer to the capital, the long Condado Beach is a popular and lively resort within an hour’s walking distance or a short bus or taxi ride from the cruise port.
