Often used as a stepping stone to the more frequently visited Croatian islands and Dalmatia, Rijeka is the country's third-largest city and a fantastic travel destination in its own right. The heart of the city is the neighbourhood of Korzo with a whole host of historic monuments including the City Tower or, for those looking for a birds-eye view of the city, the Trsat Castle. To the east and west of the city and only a short bus ride away lie several charming beaches and a little further afield the Risnjak National Park where visitors can enjoy the Croatian nature in the form of an adventurous hike. In addition, and while it may not be as infamous as that of Split or Zagreb, the nightlife in this city is not to be sniffed at, especially when it comes to having a glass or two of famous Croatian brandy.
