Cruising to St. John's, Antigua

A beach for every day of the year

With 365 beaches dotted around its coastline, Antigua is a true paradise for anyone who's partial to the ever-pleasing combination of sea, sun and sand. For an island so small, it really is quite remarkable to consider that you could visit a totally different beach literally every day for a year, although given the amazing beauty of the surroundings, you'll certainly want to spend more than just one day at most of these.

If you're passing through on a Caribbean cruise then you'll be calling in at the port in the island's capital, St John's. As well as being the cultural and administrative hub of Antigua, the city is also a gateway to some of its top beaches, so it really is the type of place that has something for everyone.

Fort James Beach, for example, stretches for over a kilometre and a half and is fringed by swaying palms, making it the archetypal Caribbean paradise. What's more, the beach is overlooked by the 18th-century Fort James itself, which was built by the British to protect the island's capital during colonial times.

Slightly further out of town, but still easily accessible by taxi or public transport, is Deep Bay Beach, which has a reputation for offering fantastic snorkelling opportunities, thanks to the abundant marine life that can be found here as well as a fascinating wreck, with the Trinidadian ship the Andes having sunk here more than a century ago. Away from the beaches, you'll find loads to see and do in St John's, with the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda being an excellent starting point. Here, you can learn all about the history of the islands, while a trip to Devil's Bridge on the north-east coast is sure to be equally enthralling. Carved out of the land by sea erosion over thousands of years, this natural causeway played an interesting and tragic role in the country's development, as escaped slaves used to throw themselves into the water from the bridge after running away from nearby plantations.
