Cruising to Trujillo

Just over 300miles north of capital city Lima, in Peru, is the alluring city of Trujillo. Founded by Spanish conquistador Diego de Almagro, in 1534, the city quickly became a hub of industry thanks to the thriving business of sugar cane and wheat production.

Located on the coast, the city was threatened by pirates in the 16th and 17th centuries, which led to the construction of the city wall. This has mostly been destroyed but it is possible to find some ruins of it today. Other historic sites in Trujillo include the grand cathedral in the Plaza de Armas. This was built and rebuilt in the 17th and 18th centuries, and today stands proud and bright attracting visitors from all over.

If you’re looking for evidence of older Peruvian history, say from the eras of Inca and Moche civilisations, there are plenty of things to see. For example, the Huacas del Sol y de la Luna (Temples of the Sun and Moon) is the largest pre-Columbian structure in the country, and can be dated back to between 100 to 700 AD. Or visit the Chan Chan World Heritage Site, a complex of 15th century ruins belonging to the Chimu Kingdom before falling to the Incas.

As well as exploring the city’s history, be sure to make time for relaxing on the ‘Surfer Beach’ – Huanchaco. As well as being an International Surfing Reserve, this place is great for fishing, and then dining on some amazing seafood. The abundant freshly caught fish makes Trujillo a perfect place to try the national dish, Ceviche.
