Viking Longship Delling

Launched in 2014 alongside 13 other Longship-class vessels, the Viking Longship Delling is just one of a 46-strong fleet of river cruise ships that Viking River Cruises operates with passion and precision. As soon as guests step onboard, they can delight in the swathes of natural light that the airy atrium provides, before enjoying the contemporary design features and well-appointed staterooms and public areas that will help to ensure their comfort throughout the voyage. Cruising the waterways of France between Avignon and Lyon, the Viking Longship Delling provides guests with insight into the Provence area of France, but also offers an excellent standard of facilities and features that ensures their voyage is as flawless as possible.

Most guests who choose to sail with Viking River Cruises tend to be senior, affluent and well-travelled holidaymakers from the USA, the UK and other English-speaking nations. However, the contemporary, streamlined nature of the Longship-class vessels does attract a slightly younger demographic, too. Regardless of age though, an interest in gaining insight into local customs and culture, and appreciating the various sightseeing opportunities and shore excursions, comes as standard. The maximum capacity onboard is 190 passengers, who can enjoy the attentive and friendly service of the 50 crew members. There is also a dedicated Cruise Director available to help every guest make the most of their voyage, and a Viking Daily newsletter is delivered to every stateroom, every evening, so that guests can plan their days accordingly.

The main restaurant onboard operates an open-seating policy, so guests can have the flexibility of sitting where they wish. Floor-to-ceiling windows provide sensational views of the landscapes, too. The dress code in here, as well as throughout the ship, is casual, but many guests choose to adopt a more ‘dressy casual’ look during the evenings. Breakfast and lunch are delivered in the form of a diverse buffet station, serving up cereals, cheeses, continental meats, fruit, made-to-order eggs and hot dishes for breakfast, and soups, salads, entrees and desserts for lunch. Dinner is a waiter-served, a la carte menu with a choice of regional specialities and traditional favourites. Drinks, including local wines, beers, soft drinks and water, are complimentary with lunch and dinner, but guests do have the option to upgrade to a premium drinks package that includes fine wines and premium spirits. Hot beverages are complimentary and available around the clock from the self-serve area. Guests can also enjoy an early-riser breakfast alternative in the Aquavit Terrace, which also offers al-fresco seating and casual fare from the grill, when the weather allows.

As with most river cruises, entertainment on the Viking Longship Delling is low-key and upscale, with most guests relaxing in the Observation Lounge and Bar, where drinks flow and music plays. The carefully selected entertainment programme is in-keeping with the itinerary, with musical revues and local performers popping onboard to showcase their regional talents.

On all Viking Longships, the varied activity programme, including shore excursions, guided tours and memorable experiences, is one of the major draws that attracts so many holidaymakers. As the Delling sails through various ports in France, guests will have the opportunity to enjoy plenty of sightseeing, guided tours and independent exploration at their leisure. Examples on a typical itinerary include wine tasting in one of Beaujolais’ wine cellars, a walking tour of Lyon and a trip to Livia, a Roman amphitheatre in Vienne. All guided tours include the use of individual headsets. Back onboard, guests can enjoy expert-led lectures and presentations, demonstrations and classes, and can make use of the library corner and ship-wide Wi-Fi that can be used at no extra charge.

The Viking Longship Delling features 95 staterooms of varying size, between 135 sq. ft. and 445 sq. ft. depending on which one you choose. All accommodation choices have river views, and most offer either a French balcony or veranda, apart from the Main Deck staterooms which have a half-height picture window instead. Veranda and Explorer Suites have both a French balcony and a veranda, with Explorer Suite verandas being wraparound, with fantastic 270-degree views! Amenities across the categories include hotel style beds, en-suite with shower, premium bath products, individual climate control, hairdryer, in-room safe, flatscreen TV with infotainment system and entertainment package, refrigerator, bathrobes and slippers (on request) and bottled water which is restocked daily. In addition, higher end accommodation suite options include larger bathrooms with heated floor and mirror, separate seating and sleeping areas and two flatscreen TVs instead of one.

The Sun Deck is where guests can relax and unwind, with a number of sunloungers available to kick back and soak up the sun, and a shaded sitting area also available if you’re looking for a little shade. Golf fans will appreciate the onboard putting green, and there’s also a walking track if the guided walking tours aren’t enough! Guests may also enjoy a stroll around the onboard herb garden that the chefs use to prepare some of the mouth-watering meal options.

The Viking Longship Delling sails the Rhone in France, visiting popular areas of the Provence region including Lyon, Avignon and Arles. A typical itinerary lasts eight days, and takes guests on an incredible journey through some beautiful landscapes, while also introducing them to memorable experiences including an inspiring look at Roman ruins in Arles, an optional tour of Chateauneuf-du-Pape – famed for its wine – a walk around the Gothic Cathedral of St. Maurice in Vienne and time to explore Lyon independently – a city coined as the gastronomic capital of France. Post-cruise extensions in Paris are also a possibility.
