Viking Longship Jarl

Viking Longship Jarl

Launched alongside nine of its other sister ships in 2013, including the Viking Atla, Baldur, Bragi, Forseti, Magnia, Rinda, Skadi, Tor and Var, the Viking Jarl is another of this line’s innovative Longships boasting ecologically-friendly hybrid diesel-electric engines which provide passengers with a smoother, relaxing and sophisticated ride along Europe’s majestic waterways. The engines, producing fewer emissions, are part of the vessel’s ‘green’ initiative, alongside the solar panels and organic herb garden situated on the Sun Deck. The Viking Longship Jarl reflects the line’s high level of hospitality, with an ambience that echoes its Scandinavian roots.

The Jarl holds a maximum 190 guests, with travellers from the USA, UK and Australia making up the majority. The onboard Program Director is on hand for guests to discuss upcoming activities and excursions, as well as answer any questions that may arise. The onboard ‘Viking Daily’ newsletter is also delivered to every stateroom, every evening, in preparation for the following day’s events.

The main restaurant can be found on the Middle Deck, and offers incredible views from its floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows. Whether you choose contemporary cuisine, or you’d like to try something regional, the fare on offer during breakfast, lunch and dinner services is bound to satisfy. Guests can enjoy open-seating at set times, giving plenty of time to enjoy meals at a leisurely pace. At breakfast, choose from a range of cereals, egg dishes, cold meats, fruit and pastries, before choosing between a range of soups, sandwiches, entrees and desserts for lunch. Dinner service consists of a five-course menu with carefully-selected wines. Guests will often find regional treats and cultural specialities making an appearance, too.  As well as the main restaurant, there is the spacious Aquavit Terrace, which provides plenty of seating for casual al fresco meals and relaxing afternoons. There is also an Observation Lounge with floor-to-ceiling glass windows, where guests can enjoy a quick breakfast alternative or a drink while drinking in the views.
Other facilities include 24hour tea and coffee stations, mini-pastries, cookies and fresh fruit basket in the lobby, and if enjoying food from the Aquavit Terrace, guests can opt for a take-out container to allow them to enjoy their meal on the Sun Deck, in the bar or even in their room. Wines, beers and soft drinks are complimentary with lunch and dinner. Guests can choose to upgrade to a premium drinks package at a charge. The dress code throughout a river experience on the Jarl is comfortable and casual. Whether you’re onshore or onboard, comfort is key. During the evenings, ‘evening casual’ is the norm, but some guests choose to be a little dressier. The only exceptions tend to be events like the Captain’s Welcome and Farewell dinners, which give passengers a chance to don their best jackets and frocks.

As with most river cruises, entertainment onboard the Viking Jarl is low-key, and often inspired by the various regions and ports of the itinerary, particularly when regional performers pop onboard. The lounge has a baby grand piano, which the onboard pianist will play during cocktail hour and, sometimes, during lunch. It’s also home to a variety of informal evening events, such as quiz nights, slideshows and movie nights that are facilitated with large pull-down movie screens and surround-sound system.

There’s a wide range of enrichment activities available onboard the Jarl. Most passengers embrace the daily shore excursions which are included in the fare, but there are also other optional trips, such as wine tastings and off-ship dinners (fee applicable). All guests can enjoy the use of headsets with earphones when taking part in an onshore tour. Onboard, guests can choose from a variety of enriching experiences, from professor-led lectures and craft demonstrations to cooking courses and multimedia talks that are tailored to the itinerary’s history and culture. The Sun Deck features a putting green, herb garden and a giant chess set. There are also plenty of tables, chairs and loungers on this deck, with canopied areas available if shade is needed.   Guests will also find a library corner onboard, where there is a range of books, magazines and games to enjoy. The ship also boasts shipwide Wi-Fi which is free to use – perfect for staying connected to loved ones back home. The flatscreen TV in every room features an infotainment system loaded with popular channels and on-demand movies.

Guests have a choice of eight different types of stateroom, which offer varying levels of space and amenities. Altogether, there are 95 outside staterooms available, broken down into 25 Standard Staterooms, 22 French Balcony Staterooms, 39 Veranda Staterooms, seven Veranda Suites and two Explorer Suites. From standard staterooms on the main deck to spacious Veranda Staterooms, French Balcony Staterooms, Veranda Suites and Explorer Suites on the Upper and Middle Decks, the choice is yours to make.  The 150 sq. ft. standard staterooms feature a half-height window, as well as some fantastic amenities including hotel-style beds, en-suite shower, premium bath products, bathrobes & slippers (on request), telephone, fridge, personal safe, hairdryer, 40” flat-screen TV and ample storage both in wardrobes and beneath the bed.
