Viking Longship Mimir

Released in 2015, the Viking Longship Mimir is one of the youngest additions to the Viking River Cruises Longship-class fleet, and features all of the mod-cons and engineering features that Viking has become well known for. Sailing through Germany’s picturesque heartland, guests can enjoy the friendly and relaxed vibes onboard, as well as immerse themselves in the full curriculum of activities, shore excursions and tours that are just some of the reasons why there is such high demand for a Viking river cruise. With ‘green’ credentials including solar panels, an onboard organic herb garden, and diesel-electric hybrid engines, a cruise on the Viking Longship Mimir guarantees a quieter, cleaner and more efficient voyage along the rivers, without compromising on the amount of unforgettable experiences that can be anticipated.

The Longship Mimir can accommodate up to 190 people when operating at full capacity – most of which travel from the US, UK, Canada and Australia and are predominantly English-speaking. Guests tend to have a keen interest in the arts, culture, history and natural scenery, and use river cruises to fulfil their travelling aspirations. The staff and crew onboard ensure all guests are well looked after throughout the trip, with a dedicated Programme Director on-hand to provide advice throughout. The Viking Daily newsletter is delivered to every stateroom every evening, informing guests of what the following day’s itinerary includes.

The main dining room onboard is beautifully furnished with well-appointed tables featuring crisp white linens, sparkling crystal glassware and polished silver cutlery. However, the open seating policy and the casual dress code ensure that, despite radiating elegance and sophistication, guests can enjoy a relaxed and laidback meal. Breakfast and dinner are served in buffet format, with easily accessible self-serve buffet stations dishing up a range of mouth-watering morsels every day. Hot dishes including made-to-order eggs and hot entrees are also available from the onboard chefs. Dinner is a sit-down, waiter-served affair, with a choice of a la carte menu options. Both popular crowd-pleasing dishes, and authentic local specialities, are available. Itinerary-specific themed dinners are also offered occasionally. The Aquavit Terrace offers an alternative area in which guests can enjoy casual, lighter fare. It can be found at the front of the Observation Lounge, and thanks to its cutting edge design and indoor/outdoor seating areas, can be used regardless of the weather. Complimentary drinks, including local wines, beers and soft drinks, are available with lunch and dinner. Guests also have the option to upgrade their drinks package to include fine wines and premium spirits if they wish. Hot drinks are available around the clock, free of charge, from the onboard self-serve stations.

The entertainment onboard is low-key but enjoyable, providing guests with a pleasant evening programme of events if they wish to socialise and enjoy a drink before they retire to their staterooms. Occasionally, local performers are invited onboard to showcase regional music, with classical performances being thoroughly enjoyed by guests in the Observation Lounge. The Observation Lounge also features a full service bar and in-house pianist. The welcome and farewell dinners are also much-anticipated social events.

The Viking Culture Curriculum aims to provide guests with a well-rounded itinerary-specific programme of activities that can be accessed whilst onboard. This includes expert-led lectures on topics such as the European Union and the Main River. In Miltenberg, a local glassblower pops onboard to demonstrate his craft, and guests can also taste local delicacies such as schneeball pastry in Rothenberg, lebkuchen gingerbread and spiced gluhwein. There is also ship-wide complimentary Wi-Fi at your disposal, and an onboard library and boutique to browse. Onshore, guests can enjoy the guided tours and optional excursions that are available as part of the itinerary; all guided tours include the use of individual audio headsets.

There are 95 staterooms onboard, which are divided into eight categories according to space and the outside features that they benefit from. All staterooms have an outside view, with most benefitting from at least a French balcony or a veranda. Main Deck standard staterooms are an exception, and feature a half-height picture window instead. Staterooms vary in size between 135 sq. ft. and 445 sq. ft. and obviously differ in price accordingly. However, amenities remain the same across the various categories, and include hotel-style beds with optional twin configuration, private bathroom with shower, ample storage solutions, premium bath products, telephone, hairdryer, safe, refrigerator, flatscreen TV with infotainment and entertainment system, climate control, complimentary bottled water and bathrobes/slippers on request. Higher end accommodation feature bigger bathrooms with heated floors and mirrors, and larger living areas. Suites have both a French balcony off the bedroom and a private veranda off the living area; Explorer Suites boast a wraparound balcony with 270-degree views.

The Sun Deck features a large walking track and putting green, as well as an organic herb garden that can be enjoyed. There are also plenty of comfortable sunloungers, and a shaded seating area where guests can relax and enjoy the beautiful surroundings thanks to the 360-degree panoramic views.

The Viking Longship Mimir gives guests the opportunity to sail between Nuremberg and Frankfurt, on the seven day ‘Heart of Germany’ itinerary. Included in the voyage are six guided tours, with the chance to visit beautiful and charming cities and towns including Rothenberg, Frankfurt and Wurzburg. Wander through Heidelberg’s Old Town and tour the imposing castle, stop at the many Christmas markets throughout the winter itinerary, or follow Bamberg’s ‘Route of Nativity Scenes’ for something truly festive. Pre- and post- cruise extensions are also available in Cologne and Prague.
