Viking Longship Tor

Inaugurated in 2013, the Viking Longship Tor takes its name from the strong and powerful Norse God of Thunder, also commonly known as Thor. Showcasing its strength and power as it sails along the Rhine through the heart of Germany, the Viking Longship Tor includes many design features and engineering innovations that have become standard with the fleet, including ‘green’ credentials such as solar panels and hybrid engines that provide a clean, quiet and efficient sail, patented corridor design, casual yet beautiful ‘Aquavit Terrace’ and impressive Atrium that stands at the heart of the vessel. Combined with the superb interior design and Scandinavian-influenced décor, cruises on the Viking Longship Tor also includes full board, most tours and excursions and a carefully-selected Culture Curriculum that ensures every guest onboard can make the most of their European river cruise adventure.

The Viking Longship Tor can carry 190 passengers when travelling at maximum capacity. Most guests tend to be English speaking from the USA, with other well-travelled guests from the UK, Canada and Australia also finding the itineraries appealing. The Programme Director onboard, as well as the Viking Daily newsletter, can help all guests to plan their time wisely so that their river cruise experience is optimised.

There is one main dining room onboard, which serves breakfast and lunch in a buffet format and dinner as an a la carte, sit down, five-course menu including both regional and traditional specialities. The open seating policy ensures all guests can enjoy a relaxing meal with added flexibility, and the lack of formal dress code contributes to the casual and laidback vibes. Rest assured though that pristine table linens and settings, added to the elegant décor, make dining on the ship a sophisticated pleasure. An alternative dining option is also available, situated at the front of the Observation Lounge. The Aquavit Terrace is a popular feature on every Longship-class ship, and offers guests the luxury of al-fresco casual dining, come rain or shine. The innovative indoor/outdoor dining area means that guests can enjoy lighter meals and grill fare, regardless of whether the weather is amicable. Complimentary drinks including local wines, beers, soft drinks and water are available with lunch and dinner, and hot drinks are free of charge from the 24-hour self-serve beverage station. If desired there is an optional drinks package upgrade which includes premium wines and spirits, at a fixed cost.

Entertainment onboard is low-key, with an in-house pianist providing background music every evening. Occasionally, local performers are invited onboard to perform regional music and shows, such as classical music revues from the countries the Tor is cruising through. The Captain’s welcome reception and dinner, and the farewell dinner at the end of every cruise, are always highly anticipated and offer guests a chance to dress up a little if they wish.

As part of the Viking Culture Curriculum, guests can participate in a number of interesting and enriching activities, both onboard and off. There are a number of carefully-selected experiences to sign up to onboard, from listening to expert-led lectures on the EU and the Main River, to appreciating a demonstration by a local glassblowing artisan. Onshore, guests can take part in culinary tastings including gluhwein, lebkuchen and the traditional Rothenberg pastry – Schneeball. There is also a packed itinerary of guided tours (with personal headsets) and optional shore excursions to join. The boutique and library corner onboard are perfect for a casual browse, and the complimentary Wi-Fi is available throughout the vessel and ideal if you wish to stay connected with loved ones back home or browse the web at any point during the cruise.

You can find accommodation on three of the four decks onboard, which are split into eight categories. All categories offer river views, ranging from picture windows in the standard staterooms, to French balconies and verandas (or both) elsewhere on the ship. Stateroom sizes vary from 135 sq. ft. to 445 sq. ft., with higher end suite accommodation featuring both a French balcony off the bedroom and a full-size or wraparound veranda off the living area. Amenities across the eight categories are similar and include hotel-style beds with optional twin configuration, private bathroom with shower, premium toiletries, flatscreen TV with infotainment and English-speaking channels, climate control, telephone, hairdryer, safe, refrigerator, bottled water (free of charge and restocked daily) and complimentary slippers/bathrobes on request. Suite bathrooms are larger, and include heated floors and mirrors, and suite guests also benefit from separate seating and sleeping areas.

There is a large walking track and a putting green situated on the Sun Deck of the Longship Tor, which active types can make use of while savouring the fresh air and 360-degree panoramic views. If you’d prefer to sit back and put your feet up, the Sun Deck also features plenty of sunloungers and a shaded seating area with great views of the beautiful passing scenery.

The Viking Longship Tor offers the ‘Heart of Germany’ itinerary which sails between Nuremberg and Frankfurt over the course of seven days. With six guided tours on offer, including tours of the charming towns and cities of Frankfurt, Rothenberg, Heidelberg, Wurzburg and Bamberg, and a host of Christmas markets to explore on festive dates, guests will never have a dull moment. Visit Germany’s oldest university in Heidelberg, or the baroque Bishops Residenz in Wurzburg, take a coach tour to Rothenberg or follow the ‘Route of Nativity Scenes’ in Bamberg, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site – the choice is yours! Guests can choose to prolong their holiday with pre- and post- cruise extensions in Cologne and Prague.
