Cruising to Kiriwina Island

An untouched colourful paradise

Few tourists have had the pleasure of visiting Kiriwina, which is the largest of the Trobriand Islands on the East cost of Papua New Guinea. Only recently added as a cruise destination, this untouched island with one of the world's most intact cultures is now more accessible. Far from modern civilisation, Kiriwina makes for a very unique and attractive port of call. The friendly locals welcome tourists with open arms and hope that with more visitors, comes a greater understanding of the importance of focusing conservation efforts to Torbriand Islands'  fragile rainforest eco-region.

The crystal clear waters of the island, coupled with stunning coral reefs make Kiriwina an enticing snorkeling and scuba diving region. Famous for its locally farmed yam's, you can pay a visit to the village of Omarakana, where you can look for the chief's residence - which is a yam house marked by intricate paintings. The Togatu village is home to the largest yam house on the island and is painted and decorated in shells.

Talk with the locals at Kalopa Cave and learn about the burial antiquities and skeletal remains that lay there. Spend a couple of hours watching some local Trobriand Cricket, where it's common for gameplayers to break out into a tribal song and dance. Make sure to browse the local market stalls for handmade offerings and tropical food and drink.

A visit is Kirwina Island is expected to be a humbling and eye opening experience.
