Cruising to our nearby neighbour, France, is easy and convenient and does not require any time spent battling through airports. Blessed with a warmer climate than ourselves, especially as you travel south, France is a holiday destination that has long been loved by the Brits. The variety, culturally and historically, of the many French ports makes it a perfect country for cruise holidays. Here are a few of the ports you are likely to call at:

France Cruises to Le Havre (for Paris)
This is the nearest port for Paris, although still a two and a half hour journey each way, so not to be undertaken lightly. For those who have already visited Paris, it is worth a visit in its own right. Le Havre is an ancient city that has earned its place on the UNESCO list of world heritage sites. It has art galleries, cafes and because it sits between Honfleur and Normandy it offers a huge range of options such as visiting Omaha Beach or some of the nearby sites or cemeteries from the 2nd World War.

France Cruises to Nice
Right in the heart of the beautiful Cote D’Azur, Nice is the next most popular city to visit in France after Paris. Elegant and glamorous, and with long stretches of easily accessible sandy town beach, Nice is also just a short drive from delightful towns such as St. Tropez, Antibes and Aix-en Provence and makes for a popular port of call for people watchers.

France Cruises to Monte Carlo
Although Monaco is a self-governed nation, it comes under the protection of France and is surrounded by France on all sides except the 2.5 miles of coastline. When you arrive by sea you will dock at a harbour filled with magnificent yachts all vying for space in this sought after harbour. This is another fabulous place for people spotting and with the highest ratio of millionaires per capita the atmosphere is glamorous and the famous casino lends its visitors a taste of James Bond cool. During the third week in May, the Grand Prix takes place right through the winding streets of the town, providing a fantastic spectacle for cruisers who can see a section of the course from the dock.

France Cruises to Cherbourg
Many people see Cherbourg as a ferry port with hypermarkets, and not a destination in its own right. However, Cherbourg has a an attractive main square, the place de Gaulle, and attractive architecture and winding streets, perfect to explore during a post lunch stroll.

La Rochelle is a very popular with visitors and is a charming marina port with cobblestone streets and boutique shops. It is the largest yacht harbour on the Atlantic coast and well located for visiting nearby towns, beaches and even a fantastic aquarium with a walk-through shark tunnel.

The handsome and vibrant Vieux Port is filled with yachts and fishing boats and hemmed in by attractive historic buildings, overseen by the protective Basilica Notre-Dame-de-la-Garde with the impressive gold leaf statue of the Virgin Mary holding baby Jesus. There is a lively street market and plenty of good restaurants.

Toulon is a thriving town on the south coast with shopping boulevards, restaurants and a lively street market. There are boat trips to nearby sandy beaches or you can just relax in the cafes and people watch.

One of the prettiest towns on the wealthy French Riviera, the picturesque port is framed by lush hills dotted with houses of those fortunate enough to call this little taste of paradise home. With a pleasant sandy town beach, a street market and plenty of restaurants for a long lunch there are not many reasons to venture further afield – although links to nearby Monte Carlo, Cannes, Monaco and Nice might add pressure to explore.

Cannes is yet another fabulous place to people-watch and enjoy a stroll along the Promenade de la Croisette. Famous for the annual film festival that sees stars from all over the world gather, Cannes is a hotspot of glamour and style.

St Tropez is synonymous with luxury and is a favourite haunt of the rich and famous. A perfect place to relax in a seafront café and watch the world go by, and sample life as part of the glitterati, albeit only temporarily.

Ajaccio is the birthplace of Napoleon and has some elegant monuments and parks to commemorate it. It is a handsome city, nestled in a large sweeping baby that trails off into delightful sandy coves with beach cafes and crystal clear water. Stylish shops and excellent restaurants offer proud Corsican cuisine and from here you can explore further into the beautiful countryside of this idyllic island.
