Cruising to Trier

The German city of Trier, located in the Rhineland-Palatinate region of the country, is supposedly the oldest settlement in the nation. Parts of it date all the way back to Roman times. It looks it, too. Blessed with dozens of fantastic ruins (many of which are protected by UNESCO), it really is the place to be if you have an interest in history.
So what should your itinerary contain if you're visiting on a river cruise? Trier Cathedral is one of the highlights, with its beautiful architecture and stunning interior. Porta Nigra gate is undoubtedly one of the most impressive sights - it certainly has an extraordinary amount of impact. Also worth checking out is the Liebfrauenkirche, one of the earliest Gothic buildings in Germany.
Visitors should also be aware that this is Karl Marx's birthplace and you can visit the exact spot where the influential philosopher was born.
After all of that, take a wander around the Hauptmarkt market, with its gorgeous Tower of St Gangolf. Finally, take a trip down Judengasse, a former Jewish Street that now houses a variety of bars. Sit down, put your feet up and watch the world whirl on in this beautiful town.
