Cruising in Morocco

Myth, Magic and Spices

Morocco, on the northeastern coast of Africa is flanked by the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea. It is an eclectic mix of the snow capped Atlas Mountains and the breathtaking Sahara desert. Separated from Europe by the Straits of Gibraltar, Morocco is a colourful mix of French colonialism and Arabic culture. From the spice souks of Marrakech to the sandy beaches of Agadir this country offers something to everyone. Tangier, Casablanca and Marrakesch are all names which conjure images of romance and mystery.

Morocco is a country that fuses its ancient traditions with modern culture. The pink walls of the city of Marrakech surround spice-scented souks, palaces with shuttered windows, markets selling arguably the softest leather goods in the world and mosques, traditional and contemporary. In the squares you can find snake charmers, acrobats and storytellers. The Jardin Majorelle is the perfect escape from the busy square.

Morocco is the country of barter, a typically merry pastime for a shop keeper is haggling and it would not be uncommon to find yourself bartering over the price of a rug whilst enjoying a glass of mint tea. The markets sell leather goods, handbags, shoes and jackets, hand knotted rugs and piles of fresh spices.

Moroccan food is some of the best in the world. Stews cooked slowly in earthenware dishes, meat with rice and almonds and fish. The food is also excellent for vegetarians with plenty of choice. Moroccan wine is good value and local as well as imported beers are readily available.
