Cruising to Ancona

About half way down the east coast of Italy, Ancona is home to some pretty beaches and bustling harbours. It is often disregarded as a scruffy port, but if you know the best spots to visit, your time in Ancona will be far from wasted. As a coastal Italian city, Ancona is wall-to-wall ancient history. During his reign in the second century, the famous Roman Emperor Hadrian invested in the port of Ancona, owing to its strategic location next to the Adriatic Sea. Today it is possible to see evidence of the ancient Roman community, by visiting the amphitheatre and impressive Arch of Trajan, which is right by the harbour. As well as these historical sites, visitors can spend time exploring the outdoors, either on horseback, cycling, or trekking. The fascinating and extensive Frassassi caves are also close by and accessible for a day trip. The region is known for producing some delicious wines, so be sure to stop in a winery or even visit a local vineyard if you are an enthusiast. Olive oil from this area of Italy is also of a superb quality – don’t pass up the bread and oils at the start of any meal you may have.
