Cruising to Melk

The Austrian city of Melk is fast becoming one of the word's most popular river cruise destinations. And with good reason - the settlement possesses natural and manmade beauty in abundance, plenty of relaxed charm and a wealth of fantastic buildings. Add a bolshy atmosphere and nightlife and you've got an ideal place for a stop-off.
Once existing primarily as a central marketplace (back in 1200), Melk's long history means that it contains architecture from many different eras. It's a joy to explore - just wander around looking at the stunning buildings and guessing when they date back to is a pleasure in itself.
Easily one of the biggest attractions is the imposing Stift Melk building, which looms over the city at the top of one of the surrounding hills. This ancient monastery has a commanding view of the Danube river, and its interior is nothing short of beautiful.
German is widely spoken here alongside the local dialect, but don't be afraid if you can't speak it. Many people speak and understand English, but any attempt to brush up on your German will be greatly appreciated by the locals.
