Cruising to Hellesylt

This tiny village in the west of Norway is an old Viking port, and is pretty but far calmer than nearby Geiranger – a popular port accessed by ferry.

Hellesylt is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and in fact offers a surprising choice of things to see and do considering its small size. Take a hike or gentle stroll in the village and surrounding areas, to enjoy the impressive views of mountains, hills, the bordering fjord, and pretty buildings.

As well as exploring the sights, more adventurous tourists can opt for cycling, climbing, rafting, or kayaking to get their adrenaline pumping. Or those who prefer calmer activities can spend time in the interesting Peer Gynt Galleriet – a unique museum that portrays exhibitions surrounding the well-known, 1867 work of Norwegian playwright Henrik Ibsen.

There are a few cafes and restaurants to choose from in the village, with the Hellesylt Boutique & Bar being particularly popular for coffee, cake, and other sweet treats.
