Cruising to Malaga, Spain

As the largest city on the Costa del Sol, Malaga has come under the rule of several empires during its colourful history. Because of this, now it is one of the best places to discover the multitude of global influences that have led to the evolution of Spanish culture through the centuries.

For example, the Roman Theatre, which is more or less in the centre of the city, harks back to a time when Malaga - like much of western Europe - was controlled by the Roman Empire. Visiting this incredible ancient site, therefore, is the perfect way to begin a tour of the city's history.

After the fall of the Roman's, much of southern Spain was conquered by the Moors. Their influence can be seen in sites such as the Alcazaba Fort, which sits on a hill overlooking the Roman Theatre and offers fantastic views across the city.

Later, the Moors were defeated by the Christians, who built the city's stunning cathedral. In more recent times, meanwhile, Malaga's greatest claim to fame has been derived from its status as the birthplace of Pablo Picasso, and the Picasso Museum is a wonderful place to visit if you have an interest in modern art.
