Until the launch of the Star Clippers' Royal Clipper in 2000, only one ship in history had ever been built with five full-rigged masts. That was the German merchant vessel the Preussen, which operated from 1902 until 1910, and it was this unparalleled design that inspired the Royal Clipper itself.
Listed in the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest square-rigged ship currently in service, it remains the only five-masted full-rigged boat in the world, so all guests can be sure of a unique sailing experience when travelling aboard this amazing vessel.
Indeed, there are no fewer than 42 sails spread out across those five masts, making the Royal Clipper a real sight to behold, and a throwback to the golden age of sailing. With room for just 227 passengers and 106 crew, it remains intimate despite its grandiose appearance, and offers the perfect balance between storybook sailing and modern cruising.
All cabins are state-of-the art and provide the very best in terms of comfort and luxury, while the public spaces and facilities throughout the ship are very much in keeping with the overall theme of elegance and class. Among the most exhilarating features of the Royal Clipper are the crows-nests, which sit at the top of the masts and are fully furnished with comfy sofas.
