Cruising to Alexandria

A sea worthy of a king

At the time of Alexander the Great, who founded this Egyptian city and named it in his glory, Alexandria was one of the most important places in the known world. An appropriate seat for an emperor that set out and very nearly succeeded in conquering all that lay before him. There has always been a sense of history as it is happening in this city, which is today the second largest in Egypt after Cairo. This must have been especially true for the inhabitants of the third century BC, when they gazed out to the sea and marvelled upon the Pharos, or Lighthouse, of Alexandria - one of the seven ancient wonders of the world.

Today, unfortunately, there are few remnants of the grandeur and pomp befitting a character like Alexander of Macedon - over the years, many of its most impressive buildings including the Great Library - the world’s foremost repository of knowledge in the ancient world - were razed to the ground or lost to the sea. You’ll still find plenty of historical wonder, such as the ancient Roman amphitheatre, ruins of which are still visible. There’s also a more European flavour to many of the more recent buildings, while there’s also a strong Islamic presence - which can best be seen at the famous El-Mursi Abul Abbas Mosque. Once you’ve had enough of the city, why not catch some rays on Alexandria’s beautiful beaches?
