Cruising to Bridgetown, Barbados

Sunshine, sugarcane and shopping. If you're looking for somewhere truly exotic for your next cruise, you'll struggle to find anywhere more suitable than the Caribbean, with the turquoise waters and rich cultural heritage of this beautiful region providing a truly unforgettable experience. Among the many destinations you'll discover on a Caribbean cruise is Barbados, and it won't take you long to realise why the island was so coveted by British colonists back in the 17th century. The island's main port can be found in the capital city, Bridgetown, which is home to half of the country's population and many of its top attractions. Since the early colonists arrived, Barbados has been a major producer of sugarcane, with this raw ingredient then being used to make one of the Caribbean's most iconic exports - rum. To learn more about this history, head to the Barbados Museum, which documents the story of the island's population, spanning from the geological formation of this coral landmass all the way up to its independence from Britain. Alternatively, to get a real taste of the island's agricultural heritage, pay a visit to one of the many rum distilleries, such as the Mount Gay Rum Distillery or the Malibu Rum Factory. Another of Barbados's main attractions is the wealth of duty free shopping on offer here, with a number of excellent jewellery stores located on Broad Street. Bajan cuisine, meanwhile, makes use of local ingredients such as flying fish and other seafood delicacies, while tropical fruits like mangoes and papaya are often used to create flavourings. Bridgetown is home to a number of terrific restaurants - such as Lobster Alive, Mustor's Restaurant and Balcony Restaurant - where you can sample the best Caribbean food, while the Cheapside Market is also a great place to pick up some traditional grub.
