Cruising to Cannes

The city that rolls out the red carpet. Cannes is without doubt one of the most refined and luxurious cities not just in France, but the world. Despite being flanked by classy destinations like Monaco, St Tropez, and Nice, Cannes still manages to stand out as a place where the finer things in life are found, so it's hardly surprising that so many Hollywood A-listers and other celebs choose to spend their free time here. Rubbing shoulders with the stars is always a very real possibility here, with the likes of George Clooney, Matt Damon, and a host of other famous names known to have a real soft-spot for Cannes. Of course, the best time to spot the great and the good is in May, when the world-famous Cannes International Film Festival takes place, although if you'd rather avoid the crowds and paparazzi you will find the place to be equally pleasing at just about all times of year. What separates Cannes from many of its neighbours is that most of the beaches here are private. This means that while you may have to pay to use them, you'll be rewarded with excellent service, as butlers deliver drinks and other refreshments directly to your sun lounger, while you're no doubt relaxing among some very refined company indeed. Running along the waterfront is the Croisette Promenade, which is arguably the most lavish shopping street in France, with more luxury-item boutiques per square metre than you'll find virtually anywhere else. Labels like Dior, Chanel, Gucci and others are all par for the course here, so whether you want to splash the cash or just indulge in a spot of window shopping, this is certainly the place. As you'd expect from a place of such immaculate taste, the food in Cannes is of the very finest quality, with several Michelin-starred restaurants to be found here. Perhaps the most famous of all is the La Palme d'Or - named after the prestigious top film festival prize  - which boasts two Michelin stars, and is a firm favourite among celebs and regular tourists alike.
