Your Guide to San Francisco

01 Jun 2016 | by Myles Johnson

FOCUS ON: SAN FRANCISCO

The Golden Gate and beyond

Sailing under the Golden Gate Bridge should be on all cruisers’ bucket lists. The thrill of seeing this iconic structure from the unique perspective of a cruise ship is one of the ultimate world travel experiences. But the true beauty of sailing into this port extends so much further; a treasure-trove of sights awaits you in the city itself.

This foggy Californian mecca is known as one of the most progressive cities in the USA, bringing a laid-back charm that inspired American soul musician Otis Redding's 1968 hit song 'Sittin On The Dock of the Bay'. San Francisco has a long list of popular attractions that will keep you entertained and constantly intrigued throughout your stay. Fisherman’s Wharf is a great place to soak up the incredible atmosphere: waterfront marketplaces, the smell of freshly cooked seafood and sea lions basking in the sunshine on the decking. This is the place to eat, drink, shop and relax.

To top it all off, you’ll enjoy incredible views of Alcatraz, the Golden Gate Bridge and the city skyline from here; the perfect way to spend an afternoon. After the bridge is ticked off your list, Alcatraz is the next must-see attraction. This mystifying prison housed some of the world’s most notorious convicts, including Al Capone. Take a ferry ride across the bay to ‘The Rock’ and take a tour to learn the stories and fascinating history of this mystifying prison.

Your trip won’t be complete without riding the steep, undulating streets on the 130-year-old tram system. This cable car system is a national landmark, with cables embedded in the streets to pull the trams along. Hop on and experience the romantic adventure of riding this historical transport route.

And on top of these unique attractions, the city is just bursting full of life and culture. Explore the distinctive neighbourhoods where the streets are buzzing with activity. Discover the hidden gems among the local restaurants, the street food trucks, markets and admire the beauty of famous street murals and art museums. Prepare to be amazed by this fabulous, hilly city.

Why San Francisco? by Senior Cruise Sales Consultant - Kerri McCaulay

“San Francisco is one of the greatest cities I have ever been to. My last visit included a day trip to Sausalito, across the bay from San Francisco, where the rich and famous like to spend their time. You get fantastic views of the city from here, with the added bonus of crossing the Golden Gate Bridge to get there. And you could spend a whole day in Fisherman’s Wharf, watching the Sea Lions sun bathe, having some Clam Chowder or making your way to Alcatraz.

Then with the rest of your time head to China Town and Nob Hill - you will find amazing food and shopping, and the sights from the top of Nob Hill are incredible. I would suggest you need at least three days in San Francisco to really experience all the different cultures and areas of this amazing city, then like me you might just 'Leave your Heart in San Francisco'.
