Top Shimizu (for Mt. Fuji) cruise deals
Cruising to Shimizu (for Mt. Fuji)
Shimizu sits on the west coast of central Japan, and is generally considered to be one of the country’s most beautiful ports. This is largely because it boasts some incredible views of Mount Fiji when the weather is clear. The port was especially significant in the early 20th century, when it was integral in the Japanese tea trade. Today’s Shimizu is a fairly contemporary city, full of modern amenities including the S-Pulse Dream Plaza shopping mall, complete with a food court, movie theatre, games centre, and even a Ferris wheel. It also houses two museums – one of which is centred around that age old Japanese food: sushi. Those who enjoy sushi may want to venture to Shimizu’s fish market, Kashi-no-Ichi. Here it’s possible to try plenty of variations of the delicacy, as well as some delectable tuna in the Maguro-kan (tuna building). Shimizu is known for its swarms of tuna – they get the biggest catch in all of Japan. The city boasts some gorgeous views of the Suruga Bay, and if you have enough time here, it’s possible to catch a boat (around 1 hour travel) across the bay to Toi – which is home to some wonderfully peaceful hot springs resorts, known locally as Onsens. Many of these also enjoy the fantastic views of Suruga Bay, and even Mount Fuji as well if you’re lucky enough.
