As host of the 2014 World Cup and 2016 Olympics, Rio has been very much at the forefront of people’s minds in recent years however, this vast and colourful South American country has so much more to offer and has long been a favourite destination for long-haul cruisers.
Brazilians are famous for their passion for fun and their style and exuberance which is showcased so fabulously in the famous annual Carnival that bursts into life across the country for a couple of weeks in February. Street bands play along the Copacabana and Ipanema beaches and incredible parades wind their way through the cities to the wonder and incredulity of the audience. There are balls, parties, parades and bands and the partying lasts well into the early hours; so if you want to be a part of the celebration then Brazil is the place to go during February each year. What better antidote to our harsh winter than the heat and passion of the world’s greatest party?
Carnival is not the only time to visit, and Rio de Janiero offers its visitors so much to do and see year round, that there is never a dull moment. Iconic Sugarloaf Mountain, topped by the instantly recognisable statue of Christ The Redeemer keep watch over the sprawling city and white sand fringed beaches below. You can relax on the beach or join in the fun and dance to the tunes of the Samba, Jazz or Bossa Nova and know that there is no place on earth like Rio – as the locals or “Cariocas” will delight in telling you.
While travelling along the coast of Brazil you are also likely to stop at Brazil’s third largest city, Salvador. With lush rainforests, a tropical climate and people who are widely acclaimed to be among the friendliest in the world it is a beautiful place to visit. Tourists are welcomed with open arms and the culture of music and dance is proudly displayed in their week-long Carnival. For a more laid back experience visit the long sandy beaches and laze and sunbathe or watch the surfers tackling and taming the rough waters.
Belem, on the country’s Northeast coast sits on the banks of the Amazon’s estuary and offers the possibility of excursions along this famous tropical waterway. You might also get the chance to explore the city’s art-house theatres and nightlife or the many fascinating monuments and museums, or alternatively you might just take the opportunity to rest in the shade of the many mango trees.
Brazilian cuisine includes all the South American mouth-watering treats that you would anticipate such as churrasco, rice and beans, tapioca, and fabulous fresh fruit, but be sure to try the Feijoada, the national dish of the country which is prepared with black beans, a variety of vegetables and salted pork or beef, bacon pork ribs, at least two types of smoked sausage, and jerked beef!
