Cruising in Colombia

Arriving by cruise ship at the old port of Cartagena on Columbia’s Caribbean coast offers the traveller one of the most promising prospects in South America. You are confronted on the one hand by the beautiful old walled colonial city with its brightly painted buildings and bustling street life; and on the other, by the glittering towers of the modern development along a narrow spit of land known as the Boca Grande. Whether you are interested in the city’s history and traditions, or the beach life and smart bars and restaurants across the bay, it’s all laid out for you waiting to be explored in the glorious tropical sunshine.

Cartagena’s old town is one of Colombia’s most popular tourist destinations, which offers a wide choice of things to see and do on a shore excursion. Don’t miss the Plaza de Bolivar in the centre of the Old Town, a lovely shaded square with a bronze statue of Simon Bolivar on horseback, or the fine 16th century cathedral of San Pedro Claver. Cartagena has a dark and fascinating history, which can be explored with a visit to the Museum of the Inquisition—luckily, all that remains from this period are the buildings, including the palace of the inquisition, the fortifications, and the exquisitely decorated Spanish colonial town houses.

Life is congenial here, and the locals are friendly. Your only worry is whether to buy that expensive emerald jewellery on offer, or pass by and indulge yourself instead with a delicious meal of Colombian specialities in one of the town’s many fine restaurants. You could do both; but if money is tight, for a great souvenir you could buy some authentic local Colombian coffee. For refreshments, there are plenty of street vendors offering their wares: try a whole coconut, which the vendor will cut open for you so you can drink the milk through a straw.
