Cruising in Thailand

Thailand is famous as the “land of smiles”, epitomising the friendly welcome you will receive when you cruise to this part of the world. Right in the heart of Southeast Asia, Southern Thailand trails off into a long peninsular with coastline on either side, dotted with hundreds of beautiful islands. It is a spiritual country where you are invited to join in and meditate, visit the sacred temples, and enjoy the Religious festivals. The Thai people are generous, welcoming and friendly to their tourist guests and they make fantastic hosts.

Bangkok is bound to be on your itinerary as the capital of the country and a city of huge character. It has many beautiful gleaming Buddhist temples, golden Buddhas, palaces, a famous and lively red light district, a colourful floating market and streets bustling with people, traffic and street-food vendors. You will dock at the nearest port which is Laem Chabang and then take excursions into Bangkok. The difficulty will be choosing where to start.

Just off the east coast of mainland Thailand is Ko Samui, a picture-perfect paradise island with white sandy beaches and palm trees that threaten to drop coconuts on you as you pass beneath them. This is an island that is perfect for lazing on the beach or taking a boat trip out to snorkel around the coral reefs in the turquoise waters.

Phuket is another popular port of call that cruise lines will pull into, just off the west coast and connected to the mainland by a couple of bridges. It is a lively island with a touristy feel, especially around Patong’s shopping area and long sandy beach. Inland it is mountainous and there are many beaches that off the beaten track where you can relax, swim, snorkel and scuba dive.

One of the main delights of this country is the Thai cuisine, which is world famous for its aromatic spiciness and its subtle combination of spicy, sweet, salty and sour flavours. There is great pride in the food which blends fresh local delicate ingredients such as coconut milk, hot chillies, lemongrass and fresh turmeric. Green and red curry, sticky rice, seafood and a whole host of other delights taste so much better when eaten in their natural surroundings. The fresh tropical fruit is luscious and sold from street vendors throughout towns and cities and the whole of the Thai culinary experience is generous, fresh and delicious.

Most cruise companies offer Thailand as part of a Southeast Asia cruise and usually you will also visit nearby Malaysia, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Sri Lanka and possibly China, depending on the length of your holiday. One thing is certain, you will find Thailand to be a wonderful blend of tropical, spiritual, cultural and exotic, and very difficult to leave.
