Cruising to Kotor, Montenegro

Sitting in on the shore of the largest natural fjord in the Mediterranean, Kotor is a true gem of a travel destination, being blessed with some absolutely stunning natural scenery as well as a range of historic sites that are impressive and charming in equal measure.

Being a coastal town, it goes without saying that Kotor has a strong connection to the sea, with fishing having played an important role in the local culture and economy in this part of Montenegro for centuries. This can be experienced by sampling some of the local seafood at one of the many traditional restaurants located in the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Old Town - known as Stari Grad - or by visiting the fascinating Maritime Museum, which contains a wonderful array of artwork and model ships.

Another thing that sets Kotor apart from most other destinations is the way that it transports visitors back to a bygone era, with ancient forts still overlooking the town from the tops of the towering cliffs that surround it, as if to protect it from the intentions of some invading fleet of ships. Those who are physically fit enough can climb up to these forts for stunning views across the bay, although the ascent is rather steep and arduous. For a more relaxing excursion, check out some of the medieval buildings in Stari Grad itself, such as St Triphon's Cathedral, which dates back to the 11th century.
