As a South American country, it’s easy to forget that the very southern tip of Argentina is closer to Antarctica than almost any other place in the world. On a South American cruise you can’t miss three cities: Buenos Aires, Puerto Madryn, and Ushuaia; for an Antarctic cruise, Ushuaia can be a port of call or the embarkation point. Buenos Aires is home to one of the grandest opera houses in the world- the Colon Theatre. The historic district of La Boca has a lively atmosphere with its tango culture while the city’s oldest district is San Telmo. From here you can visit the Peninsula Valdes or Tombo National Reserve and see seals, sea lions, whales, dolphins and penguins. At the southern tip of Argentina, on the Tierra del Fuego archipelago, is the city of Ushuaia, the starting point for many Antarctic cruises. Puerto Madryn is in the Patagonia region.
