Cruising in Denmark

Copenhagen instantly charms the visitor. Step off your cruise ship in this small 600 year-old city and it’s the attractive, colourful harbour-side buildings, the network of canals, and the streets bustling with people, trams and bicycles that grab your attention. This is a city you want to explore.

Built on a series of islands, it retains its air of a city close to the water. Its cobbled streets and graceful 17th and 18th century architecture add to the atmosphere, while the modernity that overlays this makes it feel like one the most vibrant, cosmopolitan and welcoming of cities. Within easy walking distance are enough sights and attractions to suit any taste.

One of the most famous is Edvard Eriksen’s little mermaid statue at Langelinje Pier, which has been sitting on her rock since 1913. Another favourite spot is the quayside at Nyhavn. Once busy with international shipping, the beautiful old buildings along the quay have been renovated, and some of the best restaurants in the city can now be found here. The oldest house dates back to 1681 and remains unaltered, while no less than three of the houses were occupied at different periods by Hans Christian Anderson. His attic room is preserved on the third floor of the Magasin department store on Vingårdsstraede.

Copenhagen has long been famous for its Tivoli Gardens amusement park. Opened in 1843, it is the second oldest in the world and still going strong. You might also want to visit the King’s Garden, or Rosenborg Castle Gardens, which was designed in the early 17th century for King Christian VI. A programme of art exhibitions and concerts runs here throughout the summer months. Because Copenhagen is so compact, it is easy to explore. Even a single day’s shore excursion you will be able to fit in a lot of the city’s attractions. Half the city’s population travel by bike—so join the crowd, rent your own and see the city Danish-style.
